Re: New party political broadcast

Ben,

Many thanks for your reply.

I understand the thinking behind the campaign, but I believe it is totally flawed.
Time and time again, I have read, seen and heard (both in the popular press, around the Internet and amongst my peers) that people are turned off politics often BECAUSE of this kind of negative campaigning.

Meanwhile, those of us who do still manage to keep an interest in politics can see that this intention of highlighting David Cameron's supposed "flip-flopping", this could easily also be said of your party's leader.

David (sorry, Dave) may have said what are (or certainly to some appear to be) different things to different people, but I have heard of many similar occasions when Anthony (sorry, Tony) has said one thing to one group of people and then immediately said something completely different (which, I might add, could not possibly have other meanings) to another group! So, as I said in my initial e-mail, " Despite anything else, the hypocrisy of the advert is blinding - the whole broadcast could have just as easily have applied to Tony Blair!"

Anyway, back in 1997, Mr. Blair stated that "Positive policies win elections, not negative campaigning," and although I forget specifics, I also seem to recall him calling for an end to such campaigning at one point. Now that's certainly a "flip-flop".

Further, I have no doubt that you have had much positive feedback to the campaign - the television advert itself is visually appealing. However, I also would make a fair guess that the vast majority (if not all) of that positive feedback comes from those who would have voted Labour anyway.

(P.S. I do wish people would refrain from use of the word 'Tory' (and its derivatives), especially when intended in a derogatory and/or negative manner; the Tory party has not existed since before Queen Victoria ascended to the throne.)

Fwd: New party political broadcast

Holy crap.

(I'll reply to them later.)

Thank you for your email about the Dave The Chameleon Campaign.

Bearing in mind your comments, I thought it would be useful for me to set out our thinking behind Dave the Chameleon. As a political party we want to engage with the public in new and different ways and we want to engage with the millions of people who are traditionally turned off by politics. Dave the Chameleon has been created with this demand in mind.

The film breaks new ground in political campaigning. We know that traditional campaigning needs to be complemented with a more sophisticated modern approach and we do recognise people are turned off by negativity. Dave the Chameleon is a humorous way of making a serious political point about David Cameron. His creation was inspired by John Prescott's speech to the Labour Party Spring Conference earlier this year. Dave the Chameleon has a strong message - there is nothing that David Cameron will not do or say to gain popularity; and therefore the only thing which you can be sure of is that he is a Conservative to the core.

We believe Dave the Chameleon is genuinely a new form of political communication and our feedback has shown that many have found it fun to watch, witty and enjoyable. Dave is meant to be an endearing character, which we hope will make people smile when they see Dave cycling through his animated world. But we too hope that voters will also question just what he believes in given the speed at which he changes his views and they will conclude that the only thing you can be sure of about David Cameron is that he is a Tory through and through.

Finally, I wanted to reassure you that we are committed to fighting this and every election to the highest possible standards and the Dave the Chameleon broadcast is only part of our overall strategy. We are campaigning on three key positive messages for the local council elections on 4 May:
· lower council tax under Labour councils
· fighting anti-social behaviour
· good education for all, not just a privileged few.

The Labour government has introduced measures to enable police to crack down on those who make the lives of others a misery, with tough action against persistent anti-social behaviour, new Community Support Officers and neighbourhood policing teams. All over the country Labour councils are using tough new powers to crack down on anti-social behaviour, to tackle fly-tipping, graffiti, abandoned cars and ensure cleaner neighbourhoods. Having voted against new powers to make our neighbourhoods cleaner and safer, David Cameron said that tougher sanctions on the disruptive few who make life a misery for the many is just a 'gimmick'.

Labour is working hard for our local communities. Combining extra investment in local services with rigorous reform Labour councils are costing less and delivering better services. This year's council tax increase is the second lowest in over a decade and Labour councils have led the way by delivering both the lowest increases and the lowest average council tax In 2006/07 the average council tax is £957 for Labour councils and £1147 for Conservative councils.

This election is vital to the continued growth and success of the country as a whole.

Thank you once again for your email.

An hair-raising adventure

I don't think many people could have foreseen this one; apparently the Labour Party splashed out something around £7,700 on Cherie Blair's HAIR during the election period last year. Yes, that works out at about £275 a day.
Now I'm sorry, but I just don't see how this can possibly be defendable. For a start, I don't believe that she needed a professional stylist every day, but surely, even if she did, someone could have been found to do an equal - or superior - job for much less. It is utterly ridiculous.

Still, at least we now know where those £n million peerage 'loans' went. And of course, another nail for the coffin of Blair and Labour.

New party political broadcast

Dear Labour,

I have just seen the new 'Dave the Chameleon' party political broadcast, and whilst I must commend the graphics, I am otherwise disgusted.

Time and time again, you (the Labour Party) have failed to outline your own policies, instead choosing to partake in these purile, immature, and quite frankly EMBARASSING personal attacks. It's the political equivalent of "My Dad's bigger than your Dad!".

And you wonder why the electorate - especially the 'young' - are so disillusioned with politics?! Does your party really have so little substance that this is all it can do? Evidently so.

Why can you not state the policies of your rival parties and then counter them with your own, explaining why yours are better, how they are better, how they will affect people and so on? It would give Labour - and politics in general - a lot more credibility. (You never know, people might warm to you so much that they decide to donate; then you won't need any more of those dodgy loans.) The only logical conclusion I can draw is that you do not have any real policies to comment on, and this is why you resort to such childish behaviour.

Despite anything else, the hypocrisy of the advert is blinding - the whole broadcast could have just as easily have applied to Tony Blair! Your party is behaving like a spoilt five year-old, throwing a 'wobbly' because someone is copying it. And doing it better.

I honestly can not in words do justice to my level of disgust and repulsion regarding this. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Yours faithfully,
Mr. Aaron Brown

(P.S. Of course, I don't really expect a reply to this - certainly not an individual one - as quite honestly I do not believe you care one bit about the electorate, as long as they vote 'red'. Although as certain party members proved last year, how someone votes doesn't enter into it too much either.)

Breaking News: Tom Cruise Insane!

Jesus. This guy just gets weirder and weirder. He needs to be locked up for his own safety. Poor Katie Holmes.

(Anyway, everyone knows it's all a sham and that Cruise likes to play the pink piccolo.)

Green Wing

Oh God. I really hope everyone has been watching the second series of Green Wing on Channel 4.
Tonight's episode (# 3) is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen.

Indian madness.

Now that's just going too damn far.

I just don't get these people.

Not content in having a daughter called 'Apple', Hollywood odd-face Gwyneth Paltrow and her leftie-freak husband, Chris Martin, have named their new son 'Moses' .

Not really much more one can say to that, is there?

Absolutely brilliant.

Finally, someone has said what SO many of us are thinking. There's not really much else I can say. Just brilliant.
